Question and Answer Session

For our Q&A session, our current members submit questions to ask the member of the month. They are a mix of business, personal and random questions.

WBPA: What motivated you to get into this business?

Katie Hanna:   My mom was a bookkeeper before me.  When my husband and I moved back to Frederick, I decided it was time for a change of profession and went to FCC to get my bookkeeping certification.  I loved the freedom of being my own boss and making my own hours. I was an admin before and I love organizing, so it wasn’t hard to bring that over into bookkeeping.

WBPA:  What do you like most about your job?

Katie Hanna:  I love helping small businesses!  Whether it’s organizing a mess, answering financial questions, or just taking over the bookkeeping so they have more time to do what they do best!  I always feel useful and appreciated.

WBPA:  What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?

Katie Hanna:  Switching careers to becoming a bookkeeper was the best decision I could have made.  I’m not sure I realized it at the time, but it’s actually something I’m really good at and plays to my strengths.

WBPA: What changes do you see in the future for your industry?

Katie Hanna:  Everything seems to be moving towards online/cloud software.  I’ve already specialized in QuickBooks Online and I can only see it getting more prominent.  I think we’ll have even better features to sync banks and other things like cash apps. All of these are huge time-savers, so I’m hoping to implement as much as I can to take some of the burden off my clients.

WBPA: What is your favorite flower and why?

Katie Hanna:  I love lilies, especially oriental/asiatic lilies.  They come in so many different colors and smell wonderful.  I had stargazer lilies in my wedding bouquet and had a sash on my dress that matched that deep fuchsia color.

WBPA: Do you have any family traditions?  Which one is your favorite?

Katie Hanna:  We have lots of them, but my favorite is Cookie Day!  My mom, Aunt, and I, along with some family friends all get together to make batches and batches of cookies for the Christmas season.  We use them for Christmas parties and all of my clients get a box. It might be their favorite time of the year also!

WBPA: Have you always lived in the Walkersville area?

Katie Hanna:  I was raised here and my parents still live here!  I was gone for about 8 years going to Towson University and working in Baltimore, but my husband’s first job ended up being in Frederick and I was so happy to be back!  We bought our first house in Glade Village and recently moved to Deerfield.

WBPA:  What do you like to do in your spare time?

Katie Hanna:  I do cross-stitch while watching movies or TV to unwind from a long day.  I absolutely love plants! I want to fill my new house with them, so I’ve been propagating philodendrons and spider plants.  I also love to attend local events and festivals with my husband and 2 ½ year old daughter.

WBPA:  What was your first job?  What do you remember most about your first job?

Katie Hanna:  I worked at Make N Music in Frederick.  It was an amazing first job and I loved my coworkers.  I was the youngest, but they were fun to be around and the customers were always interesting.
